Hero Mom: Kari Thorp Saves 22 Kids from Exploding School Bus

East Bethel, Minnesota - October 2025

Kari Thorp had just stepped outside to greet her 6-year-old daughter getting off the school bus. What she saw made her blood run cold: flames and smoke pouring out from beneath the front tire of the bus.

The Discovery

It was a normal afternoon in this suburban Minneapolis community. Children were coming home from East Bethel Elementary, excited for the weekend. But something was terribly wrong with the bus.

Without hesitation, Thorp sprinted toward the vehicle.

The Evacuation

She reached the bus and immediately warned the driver, Rick Gratton. Together, they jumped into action.

Twenty-two children were on that bus. Twenty-two kids who needed to get off immediately.

Thorp and Gratton worked together, helping every single student safely off the bus before the fire could spread. Her Ring doorbell camera captured the children gathering in front of her home as they watched the bus transform into an inferno behind them.

Fifteen Minutes

"It moved pretty fast. It was probably within 15 minutes that thing was engulfed," Thorp said.

The heat grew so intense it melted part of the road in front of her house. The bus was completely destroyed.

Some backpacks were lost. Some lunch boxes. A school bus.

But not a single child was harmed.

Community Response

Parents and school leaders immediately recognized Thorp and Gratton for their heroic efforts. A week later, neighbors surprised them with "thankful baskets" to show their appreciation.

School officials noted that a recent bus safety course may have helped with the remarkably quick evacuation. But everyone knew the real difference-makers were a vigilant mother and a quick-thinking driver who refused to let those children become victims.
