Jacksonville, Florida. November 20, 2025.

Tracy Moore and her four-year-old son Roland were standing outside when two dogs approached. They seemed friendly. She and Roland petted them.

Then the white dog pounced. The brown dog followed.

The Attack

The dogs attacked both of them. Tracy shielded Roland with her body, but one dog latched onto his left ear and temple. Her oldest son Bubba tried to pick Roland up, but the dogs went after him too. He dropped Roland as the chaos unfolded.

Tracy threw herself on top of Roland.

"I absolutely knew it would be death if I didn't step in," she said.

The dogs tore at them. Neighbors heard the screaming and rushed to help. They managed to secure the dogs. Someone called 911.

The Injury

When deputies from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Roland's left ear ripped off, hanging from his head. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue transported him to Wolfson Children's Hospital.

He spent a week in the hospital. Doctors tried to save the ear. They couldn't.

The day before Thanksgiving, they amputated it.

The Aftermath

Roland came home on Thanksgiving, forever changed. He suffers from night terrors. Panic attacks. A fear of dogseven the family's own dogs.

He can't receive a prosthetic ear until he's six years old. For now, he lives with the physical reminder of November 20.

Tracy lives with the memory of throwing herself between two attacking dogs and her son. She was bitten too. But she's alive. Roland is alive.

The Dogs

The dogs belonged to a neighbor. They had escaped through a fence that was falling apart. Their vaccinations were overdue. The owner had no insurance.

The dogs were euthanized.

What the Mother Knew

When the dogs attacked, Tracy Moore didn't calculate survival odds. She didn't weigh her injuries against her son's. She didn't consider alternatives.

She knew one thing: if she didn't cover him, he would die.

So she covered him.

The Cost of November 20

Roland lost his ear. He gained night terrors and panic attacks. He lost his sense of safety around dogs.

Tracy gained medical bills, legal fees, and the need for child therapy. She created a GoFundMe to cover costs the dog owner's lack of insurance wouldn't address.

The family gained trauma. They lost their sense of normal.

But Roland is alive.

"Our lives changed in an instant," Tracy said. "Our family is shaken, trying to find a new sense of normal."

What Remains

A four-year-old boy missing an ear. A mother with scars and memories of teeth and terror. A family trying to rebuild after violence came out of nowhere on an ordinary November morning.

And this: Tracy Moore threw herself on top of her son when death came for him.

She knew what she had to do. She did it.
