UK Mom Who Delayed Chemo to Save Baby Dies After 5-Year Battle
Gemma Nuttall, 29, fought ovarian cancer with grace to give daughter Penelope life, with Kate Winslet helping raise funds
An Impossible Choice
When Gemma Nuttall, a 29-year-old dental nurse from Rossendale, Lancashire, discovered she had ovarian cancer at 16 weeks pregnant, she faced a choice no mother should ever have to make: save herself with immediate chemotherapy, or delay treatment to give her unborn baby a chance at life.
Gemma chose her daughter.
A Five-Year Battle
Rather than undergo chemotherapy that could harm her baby, Gemma opted for immunotherapy treatment. The journey caught the attention of actress Kate Winslet, who stepped in to help raise funds for the experimental treatment.
"Gemma was such a beacon of strength and fought this battle so incredibly hard, with grace and dignity throughout,"

Winslet later revealed that her own mother was undergoing cancer treatment at the same time, making Gemma's story particularly meaningful to her. She said Gemma's family "have lost a wonderful mother and daughter."
Hope and Heartbreak
The immunotherapy treatment initially showed promise, giving Gemma and her family precious hope. She gave birth to her daughter Penelope and watched her grow for four years.
But the cancer eventually returned, spreading despite all efforts to stop it.
Final Days
In October 2018, Gemma was transferred to Pendleside Hospice in Burnley, where she spent her final days surrounded by loved ones. She died on Sunday, October 14, 2018, leaving behind four-year-old Penelope.
Her mother, Helen Sproates, confirmed the devastating news on Facebook: "It is with an utterly broken heart that I have to tell you all that my beautiful warrior lost her battle early this morning."
A Mother's Sacrifice
Gemma Nuttall fought for five years to see her daughter grow, delaying treatment that might have extended her own life to ensure Penelope could be born healthy. She gave Penelope four years of memories, four years of a mother's love.
It was a choice made from pure, selfless love—the ultimate expression of what it means to be a hero mom.
